Top 5 Free Tech Solutions for Nonprofits

By: Kirsten Kippen

We talk a lot with nonprofits about how they can make the most of a small budget. While it is valuable to dedicate some of your annual budget to CRM every year (check out our recent whitepaper for tips on how to do that), small to medium nonprofits can also get a great headstart by leveraging free or discounted tech solutions.

Here are our top five picks for free tech solutions for nonprofits:

  1. Salesforce (no surprise here). Salesforce.org (formerly the Salesforce Foundation) donates up to 10 licenses to nonprofits through their Power of Us Program. You will likely need to hire a consultant or an in-house admin to configure Salesforce for your unique needs, but getting free licenses is a great start.

  2. Box for content collaboration. Content collaboration solutions like Box can serve everyone at a nonprofit from grantees to donors to any staff who needs to upload, download, or share documents. Learn more about how to get free licenses here. Box also does great work for advancing the conversation around nonprofit funding: check out their recent whitepaper Why Fund Tech For Nonprofits.

  3. TaskRay for project management. TaskRay is native to Salesforce with a very friendly UI, and can be a tremendous help with tracking and managing your work directly in Salesforce. They also gift 10 free licenses to nonprofits. Learn more here.

  4. Zapier for integration. Zapier is not a standalone solution, but can be a huge help in completing simple automation and integration steps between solutions. We used it recently to auto-populate a Google doc with Eventbrite registration data to share with an external team, for example. Learn more here.

  5. Apsona for reporting. Apsona is a great addition when you need a more flexible reporting tool that allows you to report across objects or do mass importing, updating, or deleting. They give three free licenses to nonprofits. Learn more here.

Many solutions give discounts to nonprofits, even if they are not free, and we are happy to help you configure Salesforce with any of these applications to serve your custom needs.
