Inc5000 + Best for the World: What's the big deal about these awards, anyway?

By: Kirsten Kippen

We recently made the Inc5000 Fastest Growing Companies and B Corp Best for the World - Workers lists for the third year running. The first time we made these lists we popped champagne and kept pinching each other as it was such an honor to be mentioned in the same breath as tech giant, Fuhu, and social impact leader, Patagonia. The second time wasn’t quite as surprising, but it was still a tremendous honor.

This year felt different; for one thing, many of our previous years’ peers have had a rough time of it lately. In the world of tech, there are more products and accompanying services launching every minute, and it’s getting tougher to stand out in a crowd. While we’ve been a leader in social responsibility for ten years, everyone from Office Depot to Walmart has corporate responsibility programs now.

So why do we still care about making these lists?

The answer is simple; these awards matter to us because they show that we are staying true to our mission at Idealist Consulting, a mission summed up in three simple words:

MAKE AN IMPACT.

Making an impact is what drives us to volunteer, to donate time and resources, and help our clients succeed. It’s what gets us out of bed on a rainy Portland morning. But it’s not all about us. We help our clients make an impact in two ways:

  1. By helping you adopt technology that will supercharge your organization, whether it’s Salesforce or marketing automation software
  2. By providing ways for you to make an impact larger than yourself through our Pay It Forward Program and events like our Engagement Party

The Inc5000 award is given to privately held companies that achieve high revenue growth, and the B Corp Best for the World - Workers award is given to B Corps that rank in the top 10% of their peers for impact on workers, community, customers and the environment.

Together, these awards tell a story of how Idealist Consulting has achieved sustainable growth in a way that has allowed us not only to scale our business to help more organizations make an impact, but also has allowed us to make an impact in our community by putting people before profit.

So, that’s why these awards matter: they help us expand our footprint, and we in turn are able to make a larger impact. Here’s some additional info excerpted from the general press releases from the good folks at Inc and B Corp. Thank you to our clients and partners for helping us achieve these milestones.

Idealist Consulting ranks for the third year running on the 2016 Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies

Inc. magazine today ranked Idealist consulting No. 3376 on its 35th annual Inc. 5000, an exclusive ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. This is the third consecutive year that Idealist Consulting has been ranked on the Inc. 5000 list. The list represents the most comprehensive look at the most important segment of the economy—America’s independent entrepreneurs. Companies such as Yelp, Pandora, Timberland, Dell, Domino’s Pizza, LinkedIn, Zillow, and many other well-known names gained early exposure as members of the Inc. 5000.

“The story of this year’s Inc. 5000 is the story of great leadership. In an incredibly competitive business landscape, it takes something extraordinary to take your company to the top,” says Inc. President and Editor-In-Chief Eric Schurenberg. “You have to remember that the average company on the Inc. 5000 grew nearly six-fold since 2012. Business owners don’t achieve that kind of success by accident.” See the full list here.

Idealist Consulting Honored as Best for Workers, Creating Most Overall Positive Employee Impact

Idealist Consulting is honored in the Best for Workers list, which includes businesses that earned a Workers score in the top 10 percent of more than 1,800 Certified B Corporations on the B Impact Assessment. The full assessment measures a company's impact on its workers, community, customers and the environment. The 124 winning companies in the Workers category come from 14 industries and 15 countries.

The Workers portion of the B Impact Assessment assesses the company’s relationship with its workforce. It measures how the company treats its workers through compensation, benefits, training and ownership opportunities provided to workers. The category focuses on the overall work environment within the company through management/worker communication, job flexibility, corporate culture and worker health and safety practices. Honorees scoring in the top 10 percent set a gold standard for the high impact that business as a force for good can make on employees around the world. The list can be found here. Additional 2016 Best for Workers honorees include: King Arthur Flour; Namaste Solar; and Dansko.
